Program Notes

After a powerful and dark opening, the rich and sonorous sounds of the solo English Horn emerges playing beautifully poignant melody that will haunt you for days. Stamp’s signature counterpoint and polytonality give this solo feature even more depth and passion.

This work was commissioned by Kenneth Ayoob in memory of his father. Ken’s wife Ginny, is a superb oboist and alto saxophonist. I first conceived the work in two movements showcasing Ginny’s diverse talents. Unfortunately, only one movement was completed. The work is somewhat programmatic, dealing first with the stark reality of a terminal illness and death. The solo English horn appears out of the chaos in a lonely, mournful recitative. The work then evolves into a statement about life and the wonderful memories we have of loved ones. The slow melody in this work is one of my personal favorites.
