Program Notes

Elegy was commissioned by The United States Marine Band, Col. John R. Bourgeois, Director. The work's intense lyricism and rich harmonic vocabulary serve as a sincere musical memorial to the heroic sacrifices made by men and women of the armed forces in the defense of freedom. The work places demands of maturity on many solo instruments. It richly exploits the many beautiful colors available in the band. It is an extremely well written work, its melodic, harmonic, and coloristic development reaching thrilling climaxes.
