Program Notes

This daring Spanish-flavored work for young bands offers a thrilling horseback ride across the open range, all using only six notes.

- Program Note from publisher

Before the modern cowboy there was the vaquero. Originating in the early 1500s, with Spanish settlement of Mexico, the ancient Iberian tradition of the vaquero (a herder of cattle) came to the New World. Today the spirit of the Spanish “buckaroo” survives in the Great Basin of the American West.

El Vaquero! is one of more than 150 commissioned and published works for concert band, string orchestra and small ensemble by composer William Owens. Take an exciting ride across the open ranges of Mexico with this bold Latin-flavored work. Strategically orchestrated using only six notes, El Vaquero! employs flex instrumentation.
