Program Notes

La Folle Journée is an international music festival founded in 1995 at Nantes, France, which is held in various cities, including Kanazawa, Japan. This festival has focused on specific composer and performing their works in each year. Because Franz Schubert was featured in the 2011 festival, the Ishikawa Prefectural High School Honor Band requested Yo Goto to compose a piece based on music of Schubert.

The piece contains several references to Schubert's music, including Erlkönig, Ständchen (Serenade) from Schwanengesang (Swan Song), Heidenröselein (Wild Rose), and his Ave Mara. In addition to these musical quotes, Goto includes three original melodies. The different themes are presented in succession and then in a layered fashion. This layering of themes along with the numerous rhythmic manipulations gives the musical effect of a dream state.
