Program Notes

About a month ago [2020] I was invited by Alex Shapiro to participate in a Facebook group to write flex music for band. The need for flex band pieces arose due to the COVID-19 epidemic, as school bands are just getting back together and big groups are not allowed to share the same space. So pieces that are flexible as to their orchestration are very needed at this time.

This piece is based on several Mexican themes, the main one being La Cucaracha, a folk song that was widely sung during the Mexican Revolution (1910-1917) and is now considered a children's song (although "mariguana" is mentioned prominently in it) .

Performance Notes

This piece is designed to be performed by a high school band, a college band or a professional band. The reason it is a flex piece is because some schools don't have all the instruments of a symphonic band available to them, so this scoring allows them to perform the piece with whatever instruments they have. It can be with 4 clarinets, or 4 saxophones, or 4 flutes, or a different assortment of instruments, whatever you have.
