Program Notes

The logging industry of northern Wisconsin faded away years ago, but echoes of that era remain today. This depiction of the large mechanized logging camps of that earlier time also reflects the quiet beauty of the forests and lakes in the region.

Using an overture format and a strong sense of adventure, this work features exciting rhythmic passages contrasted with a flowing and lyrical middle section.

At one time, Rib Lake, Wisconsin, had a large and profitable logging industry employing many men and women. With the falling of the last merchantable pine in 1948, the end came to a logging era that had flourished there for more than 50 years, and the end to one of the state's last big stands of saw timber.

Today Rib Lake is still a thriving community, boasting a 320-acre lake for fishing, swimming and boating; many parks and public forests; and many opportunities for outdoor activities. Residents embrace nature, conservation, and especially their history. Although logging ended nearly 70 years ago, the "echoes" of this industry are still evident in this community and the "woods" as the forest returns to its original state.

Echoes in the Woods is a musical depiction of large mechanized logging camps, industry and hard-working men and women. But it also strives to portray the quiet beauty of today's lakes, streams and forests.

Echoes in the Woods was commissioned by the Rib Lake (Wisc.) High School Band, Matt Robisch, director.
