Program Notes
Double Visions, for large wind ensemble, was written in May 1987 for Donald Hunsberger and the Eastman Wind Ensemble, and premiered by this organization in October 1987. The work is in one continuous movement made up of four distinct sections.
The rationale for the title stems from the fact that the first and third sections and the second and fourth sections are variations of each other. In other words, it is as though one takes two views of similar material. The first and third sections are quiet and almost mysteriously ethereal, but the second and fourth are vigorous, hard-driving, and even a bit rambunctious. The total performance time is about fourteen minutes.
