Biography

Donald N. Luckenbill (10 March 1915, Nesquehoning, Penn. – 20 October 2006) was an American composer and teacher.

After graduating from Freeland (Pennsylvania) High School, he studied at West Chester State Teachers College and New York University. He also studied arranging privately with Erik Leidzen and orchestral arranging with Adolph Schmidt.

Luckenbill began his teaching career as a high school band director in Freeland and West Hazleton (Pennsylvania). In 1944, he became band director and director of music in the Oyster Bay-East Norwich [New York] school district. He also served as organist and choirmaster at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in nearby Glen Cove.

He has been a pianist with the Meyer Davis Orchestra, at the Homestead Hotel (Hot Springs, Virginia), and on the cruise ships S.S. Independence and S.S. Constitution. After retiring from the Glen Cove-East Norwich school system in 1980, Luckenbill remained active as a composer, arranger, and pianist. His best known work is the Sagamore Hill March.
