Program Notes

Commissioned by the Band of Blue Club, an alumni organization consisting of former members of the Middle Tennessee State University Band in honor of the long time director of this group, Joseph T. Smith. In this piece, the soloist has the opportunity to display virtually all aspects of contemporary flute performance: from the purely lyrical to the technically virtuoso level, all set off against the other colors of the modern wind orchestra.

Although Divertimento For Flute is in one movement it is comprised of a lyrical introduction followed by a scherzando with varying rhythms. Some of the melodic elements of the introduction appear in a slightly modified form at the end mingling with the thematic material of the scherzo, bringing the piece to a logical conclusion.
