Program Notes

The newest addition to our wildly popular Minor Alterations is a game of holiday hide-and-seek for your audience where favorite Christmas tunes are transposed from major to minor keys ,then disguised, layered and morphed even more. How many can you name? From the ominous introductory Deck the Halls to the final, frenzied Nutcracker Suite finale, each tune is lovingly twisted into something new and inventive.

David Lovrien gives Christmas cheer a bit of a twist with Diminished Minor Alterations. Lovrien’s clever adaptation of selected Christmas standards gives the listener a glimpse into the darker side of Christmas, by transposing these traditionally light tunes into minor keys. The piece starts with an ominous opening of Joy to The World, which leads to a somber Up On the Housetop featuring a clarinet solo. We then hear a fantasia of the Christmas classics Away in a Manger, We Wish You a Merry Christmas, Jingle Bells, Do You Hear What I Hear. The frenzied finale features the Trepak from Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker” and a final cry from the brass in Deck the Halls.

- Program Note from Colleyville Middle School Honors Band concert program, 19 December 2018

This is an edition for younger bands of the popular Minor Alterations.
