Program Notes

A resounding and dramatic brass fanfare serves as an introduction to a spirited allegro. A slower middle portion, rather jazzy in character, features a trumpet solo before a recap of the faster material. After a reprise of the opening fanfare, the piece closes in dramatic fashion.

In 2015, James Barnes was commissioned by his long-time friend C.L. Snodgrass to compose a work to commemorate the 100th anniversary of his Clay Center (KS) Municipal Band. Clay Center is a special little town in North Central Kansas. Along with being a beautiful well-kept city of 3,000, it has a long-running reputation for having excellent school bands. Their town band, which was originally organized in 1916, has performed each summer for many years in a permanent outdoor shell in Dexter Park. Barnes composed Dexter Park Celebration in March 2016. The composer conducted the premiere in July 2016 in front of an audience of over 1,000 people.
