Program Notes

December Snow was inspired by memories of one of nature's simple wonders. While it has been decades since I live in a northern climate, I still remember the pure joy of those magical early-winter snow flurries, a joy I endeavored to capture in this piece.

Specific events are suggested by the music, and indicated verbally in the score: “first snowflakes...snow picking up...out for a sleigh ride...returning home for hot chocolate.” Bright percussion colors of triangle, sleigh bells, and glockenspiel combine with gently floating melodic lines to give the piece its wintry feeling; but it all ends warmly with a simple canon and gentle reminder of the opening theme.
