Program Notes

Danny Boy is a ballad, written by English songwriter Frederic Weatherly in 1913, and set to the traditional Irish melody of Londonderry Air.

- Program Note from Wikipedia

Danny Boy is one of over one hundred songs composed on the same melody. Other titles include Londonderry Air and Air from County Derry. “Derry” is the original name of the northern Irish city and county. The tune first appeared in print in 1855, as part of a publication entitled Ancient Music of Ireland. Miss Jane Ross of Limavady (a city in Londonderry County) supplied the untitled melody, and claimed to have transcribed it from the playing of an itinerant piper.

In 1910, an English lawyer named Frederic Edward Weatherly wrote the words and music for an unsuccessful song he called Danny Boy. Two years later, his sister-in-law, who was living in America, sent him the tune Londonderry Air. He immediately saw that the melody was perfectly suited to the lyrics of Danny Boy, and published a revised version of the song in 1913. As far as is known, Weatherly never set foot in Ireland.

Commissioned by the Muhlenburg North Middle School Band, Directors Troy Stovall and Joe Allen; Soloist, Brandon Jones.
