Program Notes

Dance of the New World was composed during the months that, exactly 500 years earlier, Columbus was on his historic voyage. The piece captures the spirit of awakening and burgeoning that resulted from his journey. It begins imperceptibly and gradually evolves (though, as in American history, not without difficulty and need of reflection) to an exuberant climax. Because of where in the Western Hemisphere he landed, Wilson decided to employ aspects of Latin American music to represent the many cultural syntheses that have since evolved.

- Program Note from Wheaton College Symphonic Band concert program, 4 November 2017

While not greatly taxing, technically, for players becoming more advanced and confident, this work is a nice exploration into larger, more extended forms. Including six percussion parts using a wide variety of common percussion instruments, the 6/8 rollicking nature of this optimistic work helps it to constantly move forward. With a few well-cued solo exposures and some sparsely scored sections cushioned by tutti passages, this is a Latin-tinged winner for any band.
