Program Notes

Dance Rhythms is a minuet and trio structure with similar thematic material used in both large sections. The "trio" deviates from the topic E-flat major to the lower submediant equivalent, B major. The transition to the reprise is by way of the initial motif and a short chordal trombone trio. The melodic and harmonic elements of Dance Rhythms are traditional; its interest comes from tone color and rhythmic variety.

Originally composed in 1954 for orchestra, this challenging yet lighthearted work was later scored for band by the composer. Now available again, the composition is a true study in rhythmic execution, and an ideal piece for showcasing an ensemble’s musical maturity. Scored at a brisk pace, the piece features rhythmic variety, detailed articulation markings, effective meter changes, challenges for each instrument, a brief marimba solo, and scoring for cornets and trumpets.
