Program Notes

This work was commissioned by the Kansas Music Educators Association, North-Central District Middle Level Honor Band and was premiered by the honor band in February of 2003. Designed as a showpiece for the advancing young band, Crystal Moon introduces light articulation, ostinato, and staccato style. It also morphs melodic content from a fast, vertical 4/4 meter into a flowing half-time feel that creates legato melodies in the low woodwinds and brass. A maestoso section borrows from earlier melodic material that acts as a transition to the recapitulation. Initial rhythms and staccato articulations bring together the harmonic and melodic ideas into the work's final statement.

- Program Note from Kennesaw Mountain High School Wind Symphony concert program, 20 December 2006

This galloping original work trots along in a playful way. Effective staccati and a bright tempo open into a glorious maestoso before bounding to the end.
