Program Notes

Based on a lyric troubador pastorale attributed to Thibaut de Champagne, King of Navarre (1201-1253), this pastorale tells the story of a handsome nobleman courting a smart country girl, a favorite theme in the times of the Crusades. In this composition the pastorale serves as the theme for variations in which the woodwinds maintain the original lyrical character while the brass is used in a variety of aggressive interpretations of the times.
