Program Notes

In 1803, President Thomas Jefferson commissioned an exploration team to trace the Missouri River to its source and find route to the Pacific Ocean. Under the direction of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, the Corps of Discovery embarked on one of the greatest pilgrimages in world history. This dauntless 33-member team traveled nearly 8,000 miles, having explored regions seen only by Native Americans. By any measure of scientific exploration, the Corps of Discovery was hugely successful in terms of expanding human knowledge and spurring further curiosity about the American West.
