Program Notes

The Concerto pour Trompette et Petit Orchestre was commissioned by the CBC and premiered in 1988 by the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra with Guy Few as soloist. It is essentially a work for chamber orchestra, adding only oboe, clarinet and bassoon to the string ensemble.

Hétu describes the concerto as “a simple work. Nothing dramatic happens; the brilliant sonority of the trumpet stands out from the string orchestra, but I don’t use fanfares and the like; the solo instrument is treated lyrically and expressively.” James Oestreich wrote of this performance in the New York Times that “the happiest combination of performance and work came in the American premiere of the Concerto…By the composer’s own description, the work is happy and uncomplicated; it is written in a dry, snappy, neoclassical style.”
