Program Notes

This work is about authoritarianism. The trumpet represents an individual in society trying to navigate a world of stupidity and redundancy.

The first movement has a militaristic feeling in the percussion and trumpet during the opening section. This is contrasted with a more lyrical theme over a transparent texture. After the cadenza, there is a coda in a mixed meter. The second movement features percussion and an ostinato to accompany the trumpet. Most of the melodic and harmonic material in the final movement is taken from the octatonic scale with some meandering to other tonalities as well.

The premiere of the third movement took place in Thibodaux, Louisiana on February 22, 2022 by the Nicholls Wind Ensemble with Dr. Matthew Swihart on trumpet and Dr. Jason S. Ladd conducting.
