Program Notes

The Concerto for Trumpet and Band began with the first performance being a March 1942 recording session for trumpet and piano in the band barracks of the United States Military Academy Band, West Point, NY. Band Pvt Joseph Skarvan, an excellent trumpet player who originally came from Berwyn, Il and Morton High School, and Pvt Robert Dvorak, composer, at the piano recorded the two-movement work on a portable disk recorder. Dvorak sent the recording to his music conservatory, Chicago Musical College where it was well received in a concert for the composer's faculty and student friends. A short time later, a disk and score arranged for band was sent by Louis M. Blaha of the J.S. Morton High School Band. Mr. Blaha, former mentor for Dvorak during his high school years, had the parts copied and featured the work successfully in his concerts. Recently discovered in the files of the composer's early music compositions, Alliance Publications, Inc recognized its value for school bands. It requires a soloist secure in the high register with excellent technical facility and a medium ability for the band.
