Program Notes

The Concerto for Drum Set and Wind Ensemble is cast in three movements that follow each other without pause. Wilson has included the

following insight to the piece in the score of the work:

The drum set is often called upon at the climax of a jazz or rock performance to display its powerful virtuosity, but it is rarely featured in a sustained way, perhaps because of its limited pitch variety and control. In the hands of a master, however, the full depth and breadth of the instrument can be explored. The drum set is, obviously, a wonderful combination of instruments: at least five drums of different sizes and colors, and at least two cymbals in the hi-hat and suspended cymbal. The fact that all four of the drummer's appendages are active is what allows for incredible counterpoint, color combinations, and drama. And, of course, drum set players are often virtuosic performers on other percussion instruments as well. A concerto allows these relationships to be explored and expanded.

The work is dedicated to Greg Evans, an extraordinary drummer and friend. One section of the last movement references a work by Christopher Rouse, a wonderful composer who also loved percussion and who died of cancer in 2019.
