Program Notes
William F. Ludwig, Sr., who commissioned the writing of the Concertino, has carried on an endless campaign to raise the standards of percussion performance and to create an understanding of and appreciation for the art of drumming. He is an outstanding professional musician, teacher, clinician, author, and manufacturer. He pioneered the educational clinic program by giving the first industry-sponsored clinic in 1927, and for the past half century has been active in the development of school bands and orchestras.
- Program Note from score
The composition is demanding of high performance from the percussion section as can well be heard in the cadenza in the middle of the piece. Each member of the percussion section must be capable of performing on several different instruments. Instruments calls for are: timpani, snare drum, tenor drum, bass drum, tom-toms, small cymbal, crash cymbals, suspended cymbals, triangles, bells, chimes and gong.
