Program Notes

Concert Overture in F Minor is an example of teaching informing research. While I was teaching Wind Literature and Materials in 2012, I was researching the premiere performance of Gustav Hoist’s masterpiece, Hammersmith. The piece was premiered at the 1932 American Bandmaster’s Association gala performance in Washington, DC. On that same program was Concert Overture. After some investigation, I came to realize the piece had not been published. In fact, I couldn’t find any other record of the piece being performed after the premiere. The United States Marine Band performed the piece in 1932, and a phone call to their Historical Division revealed that they still had the original manuscript sheet music! We believe this [WASBE, 2015] is the first performance of this piece in over 80 years!
