Program Notes

With a lyrical style strongly influenced by Paul Hindemith, Colonial Ballads is a relatively little-known work in the composer’s oeuvre. The entire set, consisting of six movements, is essentially a set of variations on a tune that Dello Joio has used many times before. The second movement (Allegro) is a fast-moving scherzo with enough notes to tax the endurance and technical prowess of the best bands. It is dominated by an insistent rhythmic drive and clever compositional effects of orchestration, articulation, and dynamics. Variation five (Lento) slows down and features offstage trumpet and horn in both the beginning and end, with a lyrical middle section that features beautiful textural colors. The final movement (Allegro con fuoco) takes off in bold fashion. Eighth-note ostinato passages (reminiscent of the second movement) run through practically the entire movement, broken up by short melodic contrasts. The music becomes ever more frantic, building finally to a tremendous and triumphant climax.
