Program Notes

At a depth of 3281 feet, with 5850 lbs of pressure, where no sunlight can penetrate, live an extraordinary variety of bioluminescent sea creatures (meaning that they generate their own light). Scientists refer to this region of the ocean as the Midnight Zone. The average water temperature hovers just above freezing; a chilling 35 degrees Fahrenheit. Yet despite these seemingly inhospitable conditions, many creatures thrive in this unique environment. Using music and video, this composition explores this mysterious, eerie, yet fascinating world beneath the sea.

I express sincere thanks to Catherine Chi who worked on the video with me, and to Alan Conrad and the Lebanon Indiana High School Band for commissioning this work.
