Program Notes

On December 7, 1941, the United States was the victim of a surprise military strike conducted by the Imperial Japanese Navy at the United States naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The attack led to the United States’ entry into World War II. King’s composition of his sixteen marches for his Marching to Victory march book, published in 1942, consisted of marches in support of United States forces as the country’s involvement in World War II grew. The Coast Guards march was one of those sixteen marches.
