Program Notes

Closure is a wonderful feeling to have: to know that one can be in peace with their inner self, someone else, or even a situation that has transpired. While there may still be some questions about certain aspects, the situation as a whole feels settled. This piece illustrates that idea of being in peace, maybe with some questions, and just knowing that everything is okay now. It is in a way a meditation on the concept of closure.

Performance Notes

This version of Closure is designed for adaptable ensembles consisting of at least four players. There are written-in octave splits to accommodate various ranges of the instruments. The performance is entirely customizable from who’s on what part to orchestration in each section. The score has suggestions on what orchestration to use, but this is left up to the discretion of the director (or maybe involve students in those decisions!).

Piano part can be used as a condensed score. Performance of all four voices optional -- the performer may pick and choose which lines to play and which to leave out depending on ability or ensemble needs.

Percussion parts are optional.

The main tuba part copies only part 4. However, there are also three optional parts that are copied from the BC parts.
