Program Notes

The Clash was premiered by the University of Missouri-Kansas City Wind Ensemble directed by Dr. Joseph Parisi. The work depicts a battle scene in the tradition of film scoring, but it is left up to the listener to reconstruct the scene. The "clash" can be found in the work on several levels – from the haunting minor seconds that appear first in the tense anticipation before the battle, to the conflicting rhythms found at the climax.
