Program Notes

Two nearly complete versions of this operetta were discovered in the basement of Sousa's Sands Point estate in 1965. One version was written in the hand of another composer, not identified in the manuscripts. The other is in Sousa's hand. His daughter Helen revealed that he had purchased the libretto from Joseph Herbert and that the first composer's work was part of the package received. Sousa evidently set this aside and composed his own music. Among the songs given titles were The Blarney Stone, The Showman's Song, Their Life and Joy, and Whish! Hiroo! The only other selections with titles were the overture and piece called Circus Galop.

The libretto was based on Charles Lever's novel Charles O'Malley. The operetta was to have been programmed in October 1915, but never was.
