Program Notes

Chroma by Carl Strommen is a very exciting composition, both rhythmically and melodically. It opens at a tempo marked “energetically” and maintains that tempo throughout the piece. The work contains many solos for different instruments: alto saxophone, clarinet, flute, French horn, and trumpet. A variety of meter changes create colors suggesting jazz, circus, and the dramatic.

- Program Note from The Instrumentalist

The chromatic nature of Chroma manifests itself in both tonality and color. The chromatism of the main theme provides a unique "tone-row" quality to the piece. The colors presented throughout demonstrate vast contrast between jazz, a playful circus atmosphere, and very dramatic qualities, allowing the musicians opportunities to display a variety of styles and playing techniques.
