Program Notes
A true band masterwork, Clare Grundman's Concord has become a staple in the wind band repertoire. The middle section of this work is a beautiful chorale based on the early hymn America by William Billings. Adapted here as a stand-alone piece for younger bands, this is a stunning example of lyric writing and glorious instrumental harmonies.
- Program Note from publisher
Commissioned by The United States Marine Band and premiered in 1987, Clare Grundman’s Concord has remained a staple in the wind band repertoire. The work uses many of the hymn tunes of the revolutionary-era composer William Billings. Taken from the middle section of this work, Chorale from "Concord" allows Grundman’s stunning setting of the Billings hymn, America, to stand alone as a significant work for young bands.
Come, let us sing unto the Lord,
And praise His name with one accord.
In this design one chorus raise,
From east to west His praise proclaim,
From pole to pole extol His fame,
The skies shall echo back His praise.
