Program Notes

Turn Not Thy Face was commissioned by the Ithaca (New York) High School Band in memory of President John F. Kennedy. Frank Battisti conducted the premiere on May 17, 1967. Because of his early experience as a church choir organist, it was not surprising that some of Persichetti's most performed works were for church use. Turn Not Thy Face was the fifth composition to include material from his own Hymns and Responses for the Church Year. This collection, according to Persichetti, contains a "distilled thematic substance so potent it seems impossible for me to keep larger works from growing out of these yeasty cells."
