Program Notes

Chimney Rock, a distinctive and prominent geological rock formation in western Nebraska, is the most famous landmark on the Oregon, California and Mormon Trails used by the pioneers on the great migration west. This journey was fraught with perils, and many perished before reaching their destination. But the courage and determination of these brave Americans helped shape our nation, and their character and bravery have become embedded in our folklore.

Chimney Rock Celebration was written to commemorate the Nebraska Sesquicentennial, while also honoring the pioneers who helped develop the American West. Commissioned by the Nebraska State Bandmasters Association, the premiere performance was given by the 2016 NSBA Eighth-Grade All-State Band, January 16, 2016, in Kearney, Nebraska, with the composer conducting.
