Program Notes
This is an arrangement of a well-known American Revolutionary War anthem composed by the American choral composer, William Billings (1746- 1800). A march-like introduction is marked “Allegro,” precedes an antiphonal statement of the anthem. In this episode, each two-bar phrase is presented by the trumpet section and is immediately echoed by the flutes, oboes, and alto saxophones. Following an original middle section, the work concludes with a slower, more dramatic chorale-like setting of this heroic melody.
