Program Notes

Commissioned by the Rankin (Texas) High School Band and their director, James Mabry III, Castle Gap is an often-overlooked concert march in the composer’s output. Beginning with the uneven 19-bar introduction (featuring unusual tonal centers), the march is full of signature Clifton Williams musical moments, including quotes from some of his other works for winds. A stately Maestoso section leads to a frenzied flourish of activity at the end of the work.
