Program Notes

The Carmen Fantasy - Suite was given its premiere performance at the 2002 National Flute Association convention in Washington, D.C., by David Shostac, accompanied by Eric Charnofsky. An orchestral version was premiered with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra in 2009.

Composed and arranged by Mr. Shostac, it emphasizes the Gypsy-Flamenco style typical of southern Spain, and also features several well-known themes from Bizet’s beloved opera that are not in other Carmen Fantasies. It contains much new material, including virtuoso variations for the flute on the above. Mr. Shostac was inspired by, and incorporates parts of, the Carmen Fantasy by François Borne in this work.
