Program Notes

This exceptional composition for mature bands is an eight-minute single-movement work that offers a great variety of compositional techniques, and at the same time remains completely appealing to audiences. The Canzon section is based on Gabrieli's Canzon Noni Toni (1597), but the true underlying thematic material that appears throughout the work is the familiar 1645 Thanksgiving hymn We Gather Together. The piece easily moves between Renaissance, early Baroque and contemporary styles to create a substantial work that will be a favorite with directors and performers alike!

Commissioned by the alumni, students, parents, faculty, and community of District 128 in honor of Don Shupe, director of bands, Libertyville High School, Libertyville, Illinois, commemorating his induction into the American Bandmasters Association
