Program Notes
Caetê Jururê —The Supplication of the Forest is a very powerful two-part composition with the first part depicting the jungle in its natural state and the second man’s intervention destroying nature. Villani-Côrtes’ preoccupation with the forests and jungles of the world is reflected in much of his music, which is influenced by the impressionism of Debussy. This piece and its overwhelming plea to mankind to be better stewards of this earth, and in particular of the rainforest, captures Villani-Côrtes using the rhythm of three short durations (dits), followed by three long durations (dahs), and again three short durations (dits) during the “intervention” section of the piece. This rhythm is the Morse code distress signal of SOS or—in popular usage— save our souls: a distress call from the forest.
