Program Notes

This fun and somewhat whimsical dance depicts a broken marionette that is attempting to dance, but because of tangled strings and other problems, is not able to do so properly. As quickly as the second measure, strings begin to tangle and the music portrays the struggles of the broken marionette. Eventually, it appears that the marionette has found its way, only to unravel completely as the music seeks to convey the final awkward movements of this poor character as the curtain comes down. One last “hurrah” helps put a smile on the faces in the audience just before the curtain closes.

The Broken Marionette was commissioned by the Roseville Area Summer Band Program (Roseville, Minnesota) and their directors, Joe Churchich, Aaron Freed, and Katie Hauser.
