Program Notes
In order for something to break, it must first be whole. Through the precise application of force, this object can then be broken into pieces. This is the essence of Break, a piece that unfolds as a more-or-less traditional three-part structure, only to break at the very end through the precise application of a single “strike” by the ensemble. What remains are fragments of musical ideas and motives as they slowly evaporate into nothing.
Commissioned by the Leonard Ingrande and the Central High School Wind Orchestra (Fresno, CA).
