Program Notes

In this wartime song, a man responds to the call of his flag and nostalgically bids farewell to his mountain home, his family and bride-to-be. Sousa told of composing it for use at a New York Hippodrome concert given for the benefit of the Women's Auxiliary Naval Recruiting Station. The song was used under three other titles. He wrote a second set of words, and this version was published as Great Lakes or The Boys in Navy Blue. Also, most of the music was incorporated into a march, The Naval Reserve (1917).
