Program Notes

This well-crafted selection is a theme and fantasy variations treatment of the traditional Christian church hymn Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing. The lyrics by the British pastor Robert Robinson (1735-1790) were set to an American folk tune known as Nettleton. The "dreamlike" opening episode begins with an unaccompanied percussion section soli that gradually introduces solo instruments. Several varied musical episodes develop hymn fragments and original material culminating in a stately chorale treatment initially played by the brass choir. A joyous coda closes the work.
