Program Notes
A classic of the school band repertoire, Blasenfest by Tommy Fry was written for the Snyder, Texas, High School Band and dedicated to them, and their conductor of the time, Melvin Montgomery.
Built from a simple motive emphasizing perfect fourths (F, C, Bb, and Eb), that is manipulated with great skill, Blasenfest touches on a variety of moods and styles in a moderately contemporary vein, with chorales, fanfares and a lively, rhythmically invigorating allegro. The brass and percussion writing is especially brilliant and effective.
