Program Notes

Composed in 1979, Bishop’s Gambit for Symphonic Wind Ensemble was commissioned by the Bishop Ireton-St. Mary's Symphonic Wind Ensemble in Alexandria, Virginia, and was premiered by that group in 1980. Long unplayed for many years due to missing parts, this piece is now available with a fine new edition prepared by Evan Hause.

David Ward-Steinman was an avid chess player and the title likely refers to an unexpected opening chess move.
