Program Notes

This interesting composition was inspired by characters from L. Frank Baum’s Wizard of Oz series of books. The Yoop, encountered in The Patchwork Girl of Oz, is a giant who is fond of eating meat, people, and orange marmalade.

A bold introduction leads to an energetic opening section with driving rhythmic material, occasional changing meters and melodic opportunities in several sections. A sensitive, more lyrical section with melodic material initially for trumpets and horns, includes lush harmonies, effective dynamic contrasts, and a brief trumpet solo. The piece then draws from and develops earlier material as it builds to a dramatic conclusion.
