Program Notes

Parisian composer Mann Marais gained his greatest notoriety from his performance on and composing for the viola da gamba, a forerunner of the modern cello. He composed a set of variations for solo gamba using an old melody Les Folies d’Espagne, then famously transcribed it for flute. Les Folies d’Espagne is one of the oldest remembered European musical themes. Over the course of three centuries, this melody has been used by more than 150 composers, namely Lully, Scarlatti, and Vivaldi. This setting for solo flute uses the main theme followed by six variations. As they all fit the same chord progression, a soloist may substitute variations where suitable.
