Program Notes

Baicatu is a wonderful example of how Silva brings Brazilian culture into the concert hall. The piece opens with fragments of Brazilian pop music infused with African-influenced rhythms. Silva’s treatment of band instruments contrasts rich sonorities with bright and aggressive passages. In doing so, he effectively offers listeners a “taste” of the vibrancy inherent to Brazilian daily life.

Baicatu is organized in two main sections; the first is slow and contemplative, whereas the second is faster and creatively features distinctive rhythms of Brazilian folk music.
