Program Notes

This terrific new medley features three diverse hymn tunes that would have been sung around the campfire in a bygone era. Beginning with Softly and Tenderly by Will Thompson (1847-1909), the gentle and legato hymn tune is introduced by the woodwind choir. The contrasting Leaning on the Everlasting Arms by Anthony Showalter (1856- 1924) is introduced by the brass choir. The syncopated The Old Fashioned Meeting by Herbert Buffum (1879-1939) has a Southern gospel quality. The colorful scoring and the interesting melodies contribute greatly to the work’s significant appeal.
