Program Notes

The title of this attractive composition is drawn from the meaning of the word apex. The piece pays homage to the determined spirit of band programs that constantly strive for high achievement and perfection in their performances. The piece begins with a majestic fanfare that introduces the driving main section, which features initial melodic material in the high woodwinds. Other instruments are given melodic responsibilities as the piece proceeds through a variety of contrasting textures before reaching a restatement of opening fanfare material, which leads to a dramatic and powerful conclusion.
